A Secret Revealed

It was getting dark, the sun was almost completely hidden beneath the horizon. Ash scoured all the places he’d been to so far, looking around for Juda. He finally found him exiting the jungle on the path that leads to the Great Tree. Ash didn’t think he looked particularly suspicious right now. He blended in just as everyone else did.

He followed him back to his house. Ash waited a moment before approaching and then slid up to the side. As he approached he heard a yell come from inside. He couldn’t make out what it said or who it was, but they were indeed angry about something. He cupped his hands around an ear and held them up against the door.

Ash heard two voices inside the house. One of them was Juda, and the other sounded familiar but he couldn’t quite place it. The voice was a deep growl, as if it didn’t belong to someone quite human, but rather a beast. It sounded like the stranger was berating Juda for something. What he heard Juda say next was rather disturbing and left Ash with wobbly legs and clammy hands.

“I want to kill him, Father, please! Let me just end this now, he’s so weak!”

Ash was trying to process what was happening and then the voice responded, “No! How many times must I tell you, he is mine to take care of? Your task is to observe and report back to me. Now, tell me, what have you learned?”

Ash moved around to a side window and found a small crack that he could peep through. There was a large rock that he tip-toed on to get a better look inside. He was able to see Juda sitting on his couch in front of the fireplace. In the fireplace, orange flames flickered about, but coming from the flames was the masked shadowy face of the same man who presented himself as the leader of the Forbidden. Ash gasped and fell backward off the rock, making enough noise to alert the two inside the ramshackle hut.

Fear coursed through his veins as Ash jumped up and began running away from Juda’s house, but it was too late. In the time that it had taken for Ash to recover from falling over, Juda was able to get out the door and jump in front of him. He stood in the way of Ash with his arms crossed and a wide, cunning smile on his face that made him look like a psycho. His eyes were wild.

Juda, with a nasty smile on his face, said, “So, how much did you hear?”

Ash attempted to sound tough by putting as much venom into his words as possible, “I heard enough, traitor. Just one question, who are you?”

“Oh, I didn’t lie about who I am. Not totally anyway. My name really is Juda, and my father is one of the Forbidden. But I am not here as one of the Asmarian warriors. Come back with me Ash.
